The Estonian Parliament Endorses Kristen Michal as the New Prime Minister

The Estonian Parliament, known as the Riigikogu, has officially appointed Kristen Michal as the new Prime Minister. This decision comes after Kaja Kallas resigned to take up her role as the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs in Brussels, replacing Josep Borrell as the new legislative term begins.

Michal secured the backing of 64 out of the 101 parliamentary deputies, while 27 voted against him taking on the responsibility of forming a new government. This decision was announced following an extraordinary parliamentary session specifically dedicated to the matter.

During this session, Michal emphasized Estonia’s security concerns in light of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Estonia shares nearly 300 kilometers of border with Russia, making the situation particularly pressing for the country.

He stated, “The security, the Estonian economy, and the livelihoods of our people have all been affected. Also impacted is the country’s financial situation.” Michal expressed regret that Tallinn has neglected many important decisions in recent years.

Looking ahead, Michal mentioned his plan to increase taxes in Estonia. He acknowledged that while this may be unpopular, “the uncertainty has an even greater and more damaging effect.” The new Prime Minister is expected to present his cabinet later today, which will then require approval from President Alar Karis.

Last week, President Karis tasked Michal, who is a member of the Reform Party, with forming a new government following Kallas’s departure. The President indicated that a similar three-party coalition comprising the Reform Party, Social Democrats, and Estonia 200 liberals might be formed again.
