The Israeli Olympic team, set to participate in the Paris Games with their opening ceremony on Friday, will be under constant surveillance from French police. The French government has implemented “enhanced security” measures for the delegation, recognizing the specific risks faced by Israeli athletes.
Interior Minister Gérard Darmanin addressed the nation on France 2, emphasizing the significance of the added security measures. He noted that the Israeli delegation would have heightened protection throughout their stay in France. “Israeli athletes have historically been targets of attacks,” Darmanin remarked, referencing the tragic Munich massacre in 1972, where 11 Israeli team members lost their lives due to a Palestinian militant attack.
Compounding these concerns, Israel Hayom reported that two Israeli athletes, judoka Peter Paltchik and swimmer Meiron Cheruti, received threatening messages leading up to the Games. As part of the security protocol for the entire sporting event, there will be a robust security presence of 45,000 personnel ensuring the safety of all participants.
Such vigilance underscores the ongoing tension and the need for security in the world of international sports, especially when historical events impact present situations.
