Leaders from various countries have reacted to the surprising announcement that President Joe Biden has decided not to run for re-election in the United States. From Europe to North America, many have expressed their respect and gratitude for the American leader.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk paid tribute to Biden on Sunday, stating that he has made “democracy stronger.” Tusk, who served as President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019, emphasized the importance of nurturing transatlantic relationships, regardless of who occupies the presidency in the U.S. In a message on social media, he praised Biden for making many difficult decisions that have enhanced security for Poland, the U.S., and the world while reinforcing democracy. Tusk acknowledged that Biden’s announcement likely stemmed from deep motivations, stating it was probably one of the hardest decisions of his life.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also lauded Biden after his announcement. “My friend Joe Biden has achieved a lot: for his country, for Europe, and for the world,” Scholz tweeted. “His decision to step back deserves respect.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer showed mutual respect toward Biden’s choice to withdraw from the presidential race, honoring his “remarkable career.” He also expressed hope for continued cooperation for the remainder of Biden’s presidency, noting that he trusts Biden’s decision was made with the American people’s best interests in mind.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog thanked Biden for his long-standing support for the Israeli people. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Biden’s friendship and unwavering support throughout his career.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared his sentiments as well, declaring, “I’ve known President Biden for years. He is a great man whose actions are guided by his love for his country. As president, he is a partner to Canadians and a true friend.” He extended his thanks to both Biden and the First Lady.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin stated it is monitoring the situation closely, indicating that “many things can change” before the elections, which are still four months away. Dmitri Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, noted that there is much time left for events to unfold.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed his appreciation for Biden on Monday, commending him for his “bold actions” of support for Ukraine and acknowledging the “difficult but strong decision” to not seek re-election. Zelensky highlighted the challenging situation in Ukraine and throughout Europe, expressing hope that U.S. leadership will prevent the triumph of Russian aggression.
