Three dead and over 380 injured as Typhoon ‘Gaemi’ hits Taiwan

At least three people have lost their lives, and over 380 have been injured due to Typhoon Gaemi impacting Taiwan. Authorities have confirmed that nine individuals are missing after a fishing vessel sank off the island’s coast.

The Central Emergency Operations Center reported that 380 injuries have been confirmed from the typhoon, leading to the closure of schools and offices across all 22 cities and counties in Taiwan, according to the state news agency CNA. Among the deceased is a 78-year-old man who was caught in a landslide in the Qishan district of Kaohsiung.

In addition to this tragedy, nine Burmese citizens remain unaccounted for after a Tanzanian-flagged fishing boat sank near Kaohsiung. Rescue operations have been hampered by adverse weather conditions, as reported by the German news agency DPA. The storm has also caused five other vessels to run aground on Taiwan’s southern coast.

The typhoon is currently moving across the island, generating winds of approximately 184 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 227 kilometers per hour. Although the storm has weakened since making landfall, authorities are continuing their alerts and warnings.

The storm has left around 700,000 homes without electricity and 88,000 without water supply. Furthermore, over 400 domestic and international flights have been canceled. The typhoon made landfall in Yilan in the east and moved toward the Taiwan Strait early in the day.
