Travis Kelce’s surprise appearance on Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” in London has been the talk of the town, and now the Kansas City Chiefs tight end is sharing the backstory of how it all came together. On the July 3 episode of his “New Heights” podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, Travis revealed that the idea to join Swift onstage was initially his.
“It’s very unlike me,” the three-time Super Bowl winner joked. “I don’t love going on stages.” He explained that he mentioned the idea to Swift, suggesting it would be funny if he rolled out on one of the bikes during the “1989” portion of the show. Swift found the idea amusing and asked if he would seriously be up for it. Travis enthusiastically agreed, saying he would “love” to be involved.
“I’ve seen the show enough — might as well put me to work here,” he recalled. Swift found the perfect part of the show for him to join, ensuring it was a safe option without any bikes to avoid potential mishaps with dancers. Travis’s surprise bit on the “Eras Tour” stage was indeed his idea, and he was thrilled to be part of it.
During the “Tortured Poets Department” section of the show, Travis joined the dancers in an effort to “bring Swift back to life” so she could perform “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.” Dressed in a tuxedo and top hat, he carried Swift to a red sofa and pantomimed getting her ready to continue her performance. He even pulled out one of his favorite moves, inspired by Jim Carrey’s character in “Dumb and Dumber.”
Travis described the experience as an “absolute blast” and an honor to be on stage with Swift and her team of dancers. He gave a special shoutout to Kameron Saunders, the brother of his former Chiefs teammate Khalen Saunders, who is one of Swift’s dancers. Travis wasn’t too nervous about messing up, saying, “You can do no wrong when Taylor’s onstage.”
However, there was one thing he was particularly cautious about. “The one thing I told myself is: ‘Do not drop the baby. Do not drop Taylor on your way over to this damn couch,'” he recalled. Despite the initial hesitation, he successfully carried Swift without any issues.
Swift acknowledged Kelce’s appearance during the “Eras Tour” in a social media post on June 24, expressing her amusement and admiration for his debut. “I’m still cracking up/swooning over @killatrav’s Eras Tour debut 🥰,” she wrote, adding that she would “never forget” the London shows.
Travis also shared his thoughts on the moment everyone realized it was him onstage. “When everyone found out that it was me — because it took a second for everybody to figure it out — that moment was pretty jarring. I was just like, ‘Oh shit.’” He was amazed by the size of the stage, comparing it to a football stadium in terms of length.
As for whether Kelce will make another appearance onstage, he teased that it might not be the last time. “Who knows! It might not be the last time. You guys have to keep showing up to the Eras Tour to see if I pop out of the stage!”
The collaboration between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift has not only delighted fans but also showcased the playful and supportive dynamic between the couple. Their onstage chemistry and mutual admiration have added a unique and memorable element to Swift’s “Eras Tour,” making it an unforgettable experience for both the performers and the audience.
