At least two members of the Syrian government forces have been killed, and six others injured in a mortar attack carried out by the Islamist militant group Ansar al-Tauhid in the Idlib province in northwest Syria. This information comes from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based organization that relies on informants within Syria.
The attack targeted a military position located in a southern area of Idlib that falls within the so-called “safe zones” established in previous agreements between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin. As of now, there has been no official comment from the Syrian government regarding this incident.
These safe zones were created as part of efforts to maintain a ceasefire in areas of Syria that are heavily influenced by various armed groups, particularly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). HTS is a successor to the Al-Nusra Front, which was previously affiliated with Al-Qaeda in Syria.
In addition to HTS, multiple armed groups operate in Idlib with support from Turkey. Turkey has also deployed military personnel in the region as part of its strategy against Kurdish militias, mainly the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which control parts of northeastern Syria.
