Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions have officially announced the cast for the highly anticipated film adaptation of the PlayStation game “Until Dawn.” Rising stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Odessa A’zion have been confirmed to join the ensemble cast. The film will be directed by David F. Sandberg, known for his work on “Lights Out” and “Shazam!”
Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions, expressed his excitement about the project. “At PlayStation Productions, we are always looking to find creative and authentic ways to adapt our beloved games that our fans will enjoy,” he said. “Alongside Screen Gems, we’ve assembled a fantastic cast of new characters that builds upon our already stellar filmmaking team and their vision for the adaptation. We’re excited to reveal more about the movie soon.”
The plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is described as an R-rated and terrifying love letter to the horror genre. The story will center on an ensemble cast, much like the original game, which follows eight friends trapped on a remote mountain retreat. They soon discover they are not alone and must confront their fears to survive the night.
Gary Dauberman, known for his work on “Annabelle Comes Home,” wrote the latest version of the script. Blair Butler penned the previous draft. Dauberman is also producing the film under his Coin Operated banner, alongside Mia Maniscalco, M’ngata’s Sandberg and Lotta Losten, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, and PlayStation Productions’ Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Michael Bitar is overseeing the project for the studio.
Ella Rubin, who recently starred opposite Anne Hathaway in Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” is one of the standout names in the cast. Rubin has also appeared in the feature film “Adult Children” and the Palme d’Or-winning “Anora.” She was recently seen in the Apple TV+ miniseries “Masters of the Air.”
Michael Cimino, best known for his role as Victor in Hulu’s “Love, Victor,” is another exciting addition. Cimino is currently in production for a lead role in Prime Video’s drama “Motorheads” and will soon be seen in the film “Girl Haunts Boy.” He has also appeared in Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” and the comedy film “Senior Year.”
Ji-young Yoo, who was recently nominated for a Gotham TV Award for her performance in Prime Video’s limited series “Expats,” will also join the cast. Yoo starred in the coming-of-age drama “Smoking Tigers” and will next be seen in the immersive film “Freaky Tales” alongside Pedro Pascal and Jay Ellis.
Odessa A’zion, who received rave reviews for her role in “Sitting In Bars With Cake” alongside Bette Midler and Yara Shahidi, rounds out the ensemble. A’zion is set to star in a new HBO pilot directed by Lorene Scafaria and recently completed filming “She Rides Shotgun” opposite Taron Egerton.
The original “Until Dawn” game, developed by Supermassive Games, was released in 2015 for the PS4. It quickly became a hit, known for its narrative-driven, choose-your-own-adventure style. The game follows eight friends who must survive a night on a remote, snowy mountain after realizing they are not alone. Despite not having a direct sequel, the game spawned two PSVR spinoffs and a spiritual successor, “The Quarry,” released in 2022.
The film adaptation aims to capture the same tension and horror that made the game a fan favorite. With a talented cast and an experienced director at the helm, fans of the game and horror enthusiasts alike have much to look forward to.
Ella Rubin is represented by Paradigm, Kipperman Management, and Sloane Offer Weber Dern. Michael Cimino is repped by CAA, Megan Silverman Management, and attorney Chris Abramson. Ji-young Yoo is represented by Gersh, Entertainment 360, and Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein. Odessa A’zion is represented by UTA, Luber Roklin, and Granderson Des Rochers.
As the project moves forward, more details are expected to be revealed, keeping fans eagerly anticipating the film’s release.
