On June 15, fans at the Rock For People festival in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, were treated to a thrilling performance by Kerry King. The legendary guitarist, known for his work with SLAYER, delivered a set that included both classic SLAYER tracks and several songs from his debut solo album, “From Hell I Rise,” which was released on May 17 via Reigning Phoenix Music.
This performance marked the tenth show of King’s 2024 European tour, which kicked off on June 3 in Tilburg, The Netherlands, coinciding with King’s 60th birthday. In a recent interview with Metal Hammer magazine, King discussed the setlist for his solo band’s shows, revealing that they would perform nine or ten tracks from the new album, supplemented by songs he wrote or co-wrote during his time with SLAYER. King emphasized that he wanted to avoid relying on songs written by the late SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman, despite his deep respect for Hanneman’s work.
“From Hell I Rise” features material entirely written by King, who was joined in the recording sessions by drummer Paul Bostaph (SLAYER), bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH), guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly of MACHINE HEAD), and vocalist Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL). The album was produced by Josh Wilbur, known for his work with KORN, LAMB OF GOD, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, and BAD RELIGION, among others.
In an interview with Martha Wingen of the Bleeding Metal podcast, King was asked about the message behind “From Hell I Rise.” He explained that he doesn’t aim to convey a specific message but rather to provoke thought and encourage people to question their beliefs, whether they pertain to religion or politics. King believes that everyone should make up their own mind and be true to themselves.
When asked if he explored new influences or styles on the album, King acknowledged that his influences have remained consistent over the past 40 years. However, he did pick up new elements along the way. For King, this project is simply the next step in his musical journey, aimed at pleasing his fans, many of whom are long-time SLAYER followers.
King expressed excitement about playing with his solo band, noting that they had never performed together as a group before. He looked forward to rehearsing and finally showcasing the new band to audiences. In a separate interview with France’s Loud TV, King reflected on the challenges of launching a solo career after 40 years in the music industry. Despite the difficulties, he was determined to continue making music and connecting with fans.
King also shared that the lineup for his solo band consists of friends, which was important to him. He wanted to create a drama-free environment where the band members could enjoy each other’s company both on and off stage. He recounted how Mark Osegueda, the band’s vocalist, was particularly excited when he was offered the gig, having worked on demos with King and Bostaph for over a year.
King praised Osegueda’s vocal performance on “From Hell I Rise,” noting that he pushed himself to new heights during the recording sessions. King was initially concerned about Osegueda’s ability to replicate his studio performance live but was reassured by the vocalist’s confidence.
King ultimately decided to name the band KERRY KING, despite initially considering other names like KING’S REIGN and BLOOD REIGN. He explained that many potential names were already taken by obscure bands, and he ultimately embraced the simplicity and recognition of his own name.
The album “From Hell I Rise” covers a range of topics, including religion, war, and various heavy and punk influences. King believes that fans of SLAYER will find something to enjoy on the record, whether they prefer classic punk, thrash, or heavy metal. He also hinted at more music to come, with several songs still in the works.
KERRY KING will be a special guest on the upcoming LAMB OF GOD/MASTODON North American “Ashes Of Leviathan” co-headline tour, which kicks off on July 19 in Grand Prairie, Texas, and wraps up on August 31 in Omaha, Nebraska. Fans can look forward to experiencing King’s new music and live performances as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his career.
