Weather forecast for Montevideo before you head out on July 23rd.

Due to climate change, we are experiencing more unpredictable weather patterns. It’s not unusual for a single day to bring high temperatures, steady rain, and even frost. Therefore, it’s important to check the weather forecast before heading out.

On Tuesday, Montevideo can expect a high of 21 degrees Celsius and a low of 15 degrees. The ultraviolet (UV) index will be moderate, measured at 2.

When it comes to rain, there’s only a 4% chance of precipitation during the day, which will see cloud cover at around 72%. By nighttime, that probability drops to 1%, with just 14% cloud cover. Wind gusts will reach 18 kilometers per hour during the day, increasing somewhat to 32 kilometers per hour at night.

Montevideo has a humid subtropical climate, with an average annual temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius. The weather remains fairly temperate throughout the year, with distinct seasons, particularly winter from June to August and summer from December to February. Being a coastal city, Montevideo typically experiences wind almost year-round.

In winter, it’s not rare to see rain and fog, with temperatures occasionally dropping to freezing. While snow is virtually nonexistent, the city can experience mild winter days with temperatures reaching up to 20 degrees. Spring and autumn are generally mild.

During the summer months, heatwaves with highs around 35 degrees and lows around 20 degrees are common. Notably, residents need to be cautious about UV rays, which can be stronger here than in many other places due to the country’s geographic position.

In terms of temperature records, Montevideo has seen a record low of -5.6 degrees and a high of 42.8 degrees. Interestingly, the only recorded snowfall occurred on July 13, 1930, coinciding with the first match of the FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay itself is characterized by a temperate and humid climate, featuring warm summers and cooler winters. Due to its geographic location and proximity to the ocean, it experiences two rainy seasons each year: one in spring/summer and the other in autumn.

The national average temperature is about 17 degrees Celsius annually, but temperatures can vary significantly across the country. The northwest region, including Artigas, Salto, and Rivera, is generally warmer, averaging around 18 degrees, while the southeast, which includes Montevideo, Maldonado, Rocha, and Lavalleja, is cooler, averaging 16 degrees.

Strong winds are common in Uruguay, resulting in milder summers and cooler winters. In some months, up to 25 frosts can occur.

Recently, on January 15, 2022, Uruguay set a new record for the highest temperature ever, reaching 44 degrees in Florida, matching the previous record set on January 20, 1943. On the flip side, the lowest recorded temperature was -7.6 degrees, registered in Mercedes on July 29, 2007.

Scientists predict that due to climate change, Uruguay could see a temperature increase of up to three degrees by the year 2100, along with an expected rise in precipitation levels.
