What cases was Milton Morales Figueroa, the SSC-CDMX commissioner who was assassinated in Coacalco, investigating?

On the morning of July 21, Milton Morales Figueroa was tragically murdered. He held the position of General Coordinator within the Tactical Strategy and Special Operations Unit, which is part of the Mexico City Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC-CDMX). At the time of the incident, Morales Figueroa was off-duty in the municipality of Coacalco de Berriozábal, located in the State of Mexico.

Reports indicate that he was out to buy food in the Coacalco Centro area when he was confronted by an armed assailant. Without exchanging any words, the attacker shot him in the head. This heinous act prompted a significant police response in the vicinity. Emergency services confirmed upon arrival that the 40-year-old commissioner had already succumbed to his injuries, noting that he had suffered a wound to the head.

Pablo Vázquez Camacho, the Secretary of Citizen Security for Mexico City, expressed deep sorrow over Figueroa’s death, highlighting his commendable service to the department. Former police chief Omar García Harfuch also spoke out, vowing to bring those responsible for the murder to justice and describing Figueroa as both an outstanding investigator and a dear friend.

Figueroa is remembered for leading significant investigations into high-profile cases, ranging from thefts to acts of terrorism in the capital. Before his career in security, Milton earned a degree in Industrial Design from the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes.

He was notably the head of the investigation following the assassination attempt on journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva in December 2022, which resulted in the arrest of over a dozen individuals. Additionally, Figueroa was involved in inquiries into serious crimes.

According to journalist Héctor de Mauleón from El Universal, Figueroa directed a case that led to the capture of a drug dealer known as Édgar Jesús, alias "El Faso." His arrest occurred in early June in the state of Quintana Roo. "El Faso" faced accusations of involvement in drug trafficking and extortion in several boroughs, including Tlalpan, Xochimilco, and Coyoacán. He is also allegedly connected to the disappearance of former Pumas football player Diego Jonathan Rodríguez, known as "El Kalusha."

In addition, Figueroa oversaw the investigation into the burglary of Spanish singer Miguel Bosé’s home on August 18, 2023, leading to the arrest of five suspects. He was actively involved in operations to combat organized crime in Iztapalapa before his untimely death.

While authorities have promised to find the culprits behind this crime, the suspects have yet to be identified, and no clear motive for the assassination has been established. The case remains open and under investigation, with the hope that justice will be served for Milton Morales Figueroa.
