This weekend marks the beginning of a new edition of the Olympic Games, a historic event unlike any before. For the first time, the opening ceremony will not take place inside a stadium; instead, it will be held on the waters of the Seine River, promising an extraordinary spectacle.
In previous Olympic Games, thousands of athletes traditionally paraded into a sporting arena, typically an athletics track, waving their national flags. This year, however, a completely different and innovative approach has been adopted.
Delegations from over 200 countries will float down the Seine River aboard boats, traveling six kilometers from the Austerlitz Bridge to the Trocadéro. Along the way, they will pass by various iconic locations in the French capital as part of a vibrant ceremony.
As detailed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), “the Seine, the city’s main waterway, will replace the traditional athletics track. The riverbanks will serve as stands for spectators, while the setting sun reflecting off famous Parisian monuments will create a stunning backdrop for the event. This outdoor concept will make Paris 2024 the largest opening ceremony in terms of audience and geographic reach.”
For this unique event, 222,000 free tickets have been distributed for the upper banks of the river, and an additional 104,000 have been made available for the lower banks. The Peruvian team will participate with 26 representatives, led by flag bearers María Luisa Doig and Juan Postigos in the parade.
Although competitions officially commenced on July 24 with soccer and rugby matches, the official opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics is scheduled for Friday, July 26, starting at 12:30 PM Peruvian time (7:00 PM France time). The event will feature an artistic showcase highlighting France’s cultural diversity on a global stage.
In Peru and throughout Latin America, the live broadcast of the Paris 2024 Olympics will be handled by Claro Sports, providing an extensive coverage of 19 hours each day across its multiplatform services and YouTube channel. Additionally, in Peru, viewers can enjoy the event on ATV Perú’s television channel and its website for free. Movistar Deportes will also be available on cable, covering only the Peruvian team. For updates and highlights from this unprecedented event, Infobae Perú will deliver all relevant details and special moments.
According to the Paris 2024 organizers, approximately 1.5 billion people are expected to tune in to see the ceremony on television. The eyes of the world will be on Paris as this historic parade on the Seine marks a significant change in how opening ceremonies are conducted.
It’s worth noting that Kimberly García is one of Peru’s key athletes competing in Paris. The national racewalker aims to build on her impressive performance by aiming for a podium finish in the 20 km racewalk. With the support of all Peruvians behind her, “Kimy” has a real shot at winning a medal, despite the unpredictable nature of competition.
