After nearly two decades with CNN, Poppy Harlow has decided to part ways with the network. Harlow, who joined CNN in 2008 and most recently co-hosted the now-canceled “CNN This Morning,” announced her departure in a heartfelt memo to her colleagues on April 26. In her message, she described her time at CNN as a “gift,” expressing gratitude for the opportunities and experiences she had during her tenure.
“The nearly two decades since have been a gift. I have been inspired by you and learned so much from you – who are (and will remain) dear friends,” Harlow wrote. “I grew up here: as a journalist and as a person. I was allowed to stumble, to falter, and then to try again with the support and care of this CNN family. This place has shaped me as a leader, taught me resilience, shown me the value of perspective and how to make hard decisions.”
Harlow also took to Instagram to share her thoughts, stating that she “loved every moment” of her time with CNN. She reflected on the significant stories she covered, including the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the 2015 Paris terror attacks. “CNN gave me the opportunity to travel across this country and around the world – often at the worst of times, but when humanity also shows the best of itself,” she said. “There’s been plenty written about what’s wrong with journalism, and the challenges our industry faces. And it does. But there is also so much right with it. At the heart of everything we do is the pursuit of truth – it is the core of CNN. I remain CNN’s biggest fan and I’ll be watching and cheering you on every day.”
Mark Thompson, CNN’s chief executive, praised Harlow in his statement, calling her a “unique talent who combines formidable reporting and interviewing prowess with a human touch that audiences have always responded to. She’s been a wonderful colleague at CNN, and we know she will have much success in her future endeavors.”
Harlow’s departure comes just weeks after “CNN This Morning” was canceled in February as part of a larger revamp of CNN’s morning schedule. The show, which launched in November 2022, initially featured Harlow alongside Don Lemon and Kaitlan Collins. However, Lemon was ousted from the network in April 2023, and Collins later left for her primetime show in June. Phil Mattingly was brought on to co-host with Harlow, but the show was eventually cut. While Mattingly has since been named a national correspondent, Harlow decided to leave the network.
As she steps away from CNN, Harlow shared her plans to focus on her family and support the evolution of journalism. “I plan to walk our children to school and pick them up (hopefully they won’t get sick of me!), and to support the evolution of journalism in every way I can, while preserving the human(ity) in it. I’m excited for what is ahead – and I will be rooting for CNN always.”
In a related development, Ji Min Lee, another prominent CNN personality, has also decided to take a break from the network. Lee, known for her engaging reporting and charismatic on-screen presence, has chosen to step back and take an idyllic break to focus on personal growth and well-being. In a candid interview, Lee opened up about her decision, emphasizing the importance of self-care and mental health.
“After years of being in the fast-paced world of news, I realized it was time to take a step back and focus on myself,” Lee said. “The constant pressure and demands of the job can take a toll on anyone, and I felt it was crucial to prioritize my well-being. This break will allow me to recharge and come back stronger.”
Lee’s decision to take a break has been met with support from her colleagues and fans alike. Many have praised her for recognizing the need for self-care and setting an example for others in the industry. “Ji Min Lee has always been a dedicated and passionate journalist,” said a CNN spokesperson. “We fully support her decision to take this time for herself and look forward to her return.”
As Harlow and Lee embark on new chapters in their lives, their departures mark a significant moment for CNN. Both journalists have made substantial contributions to the network and have left a lasting impact on their colleagues and viewers. Their decisions to step away, whether temporarily or permanently, highlight the importance of balance and self-care in the demanding world of journalism.
In conclusion, the departures of Poppy Harlow and Ji Min Lee from CNN underscore the evolving landscape of the news industry. As these talented journalists take time to focus on personal growth and well-being, they leave behind a legacy of dedication, resilience, and a commitment to the pursuit of truth. Their journeys serve as a reminder of the importance of self-care and the need to prioritize mental health in any profession.
