Since the release of Field Music’s 2021 album “Flat White Moon,” brothers David and Peter Brewis have been busy with their own solo projects. David released “The Soft Struggles,” while Peter unveiled “Blowdry Colossus.” Today, they return as a duo with the announcement of a new Field Music record titled “Limits Of Language.” The lead single, “Six Weeks, Nine Wells,” is now available for listeners.
Peter Brewis shared insights about the new album, explaining, “We didn’t want to use the synths just as a nostalgic thumbprint. I hope that the approach was more Eno-esque than that. Exploring the capabilities of the machines.” David added, “I think we’ve always been quite pure in our intentions as artists. We’ve never altered what we do for the sake of making money or chasing what other people like. And there’s not really any reward for doing that beyond getting to make the music you want to make. But what if after all that you can’t even make the music?”
The tracklist for “Limits Of Language” is as follows:
1. Six Weeks, Nine Wells
2. The Guardian Of Sleep
3. The Limits Of Language
4. Sounds About Right
5. Absolutely Negative
6. Curfew In The Square

8. On The Other Side

10. I Might Have Been Wrong
11. Between The Bridges
“Limits Of Language” is set to be released on October 11 via Memphis Industries.
Back in 2022, the touring cycle for the “Flat White Moon” album concluded with a sense of finality. For the first time since their Mercury-nominated album “Plumb,” released ten years and several albums earlier, Peter and David Brewis had no clear plan for what would come next. After six years of continuous work, they realized that if Field Music was to continue, it would need to evolve in both sound and scope.
David Brewis elaborated, “We came to the conclusion that we should just start making, pursuing whatever we were most excited about at that moment, and if that music felt like it should be part of a Field Music record, then we would go with that. And if not, well, we’ll make other records.”
In 2023, David released his solo album “Soft Struggles,” and Peter released “Blowdry Colossus.” Additionally, they collaborated on a limited-issue brass LP titled “Binding Time.” While Peter was working on the instrumental compositions for his solo album, he was also experimenting with a batch of songs that would eventually form the basis of “Limits of Language.”
Peter emphasized their approach to the new album, stating, “We didn’t want to use the synths just as a nostalgic thumbprint. I hope that the approach was more Eno-esque than that. Exploring the capabilities of the machines.”
