A garbage truck nearly caught fire on Monday night amid ongoing tensions between the Buenos Aires government and the truck drivers’ union regarding waste collection services.
A video circulating on social media showed the truck dumping a large amount of garbage onto Avenida Belgrano, which provoked public outrage as many interpreted it as a union protest against the city’s administration. However, police sources later revealed that workers from the urban hygiene department for the contracted company, Ashira, identified a small fire inside one of their trucks. They acted quickly to open the truck in order to protect their equipment.
The incident occurred around Avenida Belgrano at number 3,400, where a crew from the contracting company was deployed to clean up the area after the event.
Jorge Macri, the head of the Buenos Aires government, addressed the situation via his account on X, stating, “I want to inform you that I have already demanded that the company remove all the rubbish it spread and leave everything clean. It’s their responsibility, and we will ensure they meet their obligation.”
The situation is still unfolding, and further updates are expected.
