Villarruel Addresses France Controversy: “I Wanted to Defend the Team”

Victoria Villarruel recently addressed the criticism she faced following her comments in support of the Argentine national soccer team, which included strong remarks against France. This controversy brought about questions regarding Javier Milei’s stance, and led Karina Milei to visit the French embassy in Argentina to offer an apology.

In her defense, Villarruel stated, “I have always wanted to support the Argentine team and the Argentine people, so I tend to overlook all other interpretations and I’m not offended by them. What’s most important is to support every Argentinian and the team, which has given us so much joy. I believe we all agree on expressing our gratitude and support.”

When asked about the current political situation in the government, she acknowledged that society has been very supportive but also added that it is a challenging time. Villarruel, along with President Milei and the Cabinet, is aware that they are asking a lot from the public. She pointed out that the last twenty years have seen a significant decline in state institutions and political integrity. “What we aim to do is restore what made Argentina a great country: love for our homeland and honesty.”

She emphasized the need for hard work as the result of years of institutional decay and the weakening of social bonds among Argentinians will not change overnight.

Villarruel’s earlier comments about France stemmed from a controversy involving Enzo Fernández of the national team and a song deemed racist. She asserted, “Argentina is a sovereign and free country. We have never had colonies or second-class citizens. We have never imposed our way of life on anyone, and we will not tolerate it being imposed on us.” She expressed solidarity with Enzo and Lionel Messi, declaring, “Argentinians will always hold their heads high. Long live Argentinian identity!”

Her statements prompted Karina Milei to seek a meeting at the French Embassy. Reports indicate that during her discussion with Ambassador Romain Nadal, Karina conveyed that the Argentine government does not share Villarruel’s comments about France being a “colonialist country.”

Karina “clarified that the unfortunate comment made on social media was a personal opinion and not the position of the government, and that mixing sports passions with diplomatic matters is not appropriate,” said Adorni during a press conference at the Casa Rosada.

Despite differing opinions, the spokesperson denied any existing discord between Villarruel and the Casa Rosada, asserting, “That’s your speculation. What the Vice President said are her own words and do not reflect the government’s position.”
