However, after a well-received episode titled “The Red and the Gold,” featuring a dramatic battle between dragons Meleys and Vhagar along with riders Rhaenys and Aemond, the latest installment has generated considerable discontent among fans. While opinions vary greatly, there has been a notable backlash toward this new episode, ironically called “The Mob.” This uproar seems to stem largely from a particular scene that angered much of the audience.
In this latest episode, we saw the introduction of dragon seeds, Daemon’s new nightmares, and the first conscious meeting between Aegon II and Aemond. Yet, much of the focus was taken by a kiss between characters Rhaenyra, a central figure in the series, and Mysaria, who has become her advisor due to her privileged information. While there had been tension between them previously, not everyone received this development positively.
Critics argue that adding such scenes undermines the narrative. Comments on platforms like IMDb reflect this sentiment, with some viewers expressing frustration that the writers appear to be adding unnecessary elements that detract from the show’s core conflict. The episode has received a low rating of 6.2, making it the worst-rated episode of the series, and it’s particularly criticized in countries like Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern nations where female relationships are viewed differently.
It’s important to note that there is some truth to the fans’ critiques regarding the kiss. The actress Sonoya Mizuno revealed in an interview that the scene was somewhat improvised and wasn’t originally scripted as a kiss. Instead, it was intended as an intimate moment, leading to the kiss feeling organic in context.
Mizuno expressed that the embrace between the characters was a crucial part of their connection, stating, “I think it was the hug—the intimate vulnerability of that hug—that transformed into this tender and passionate kiss. It was quite… amazing. I think it’s very exciting in the moment for both of them.”
Despite the polarized reactions, the impact of the kiss reveals just how deeply viewers engage with the characters and the story, emphasizing their emotional investment in the series.
