The National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) has raised a significant concern: over one million National Identity Documents (DNI) are expired, and nearly 900,000 are nearing expiration.
This alarming information aims to encourage citizens to take necessary steps to renew their documents and avoid complications in civil, notarial, and financial transactions. According to Reniec, there are currently 1,532,037 expired DNIs and 985,395 that are about to expire. The agency urges everyone to update their personal information and photos to keep their documentation valid.
Renewing a DNI, which occurs every eight years, can be done starting 60 days before the current document’s expiration date. This advance notice is recommended to prevent any potential issues that might arise during the renewal process. Once renewed, the new DNI will be valid for another eight years from the date of issue.
Reniec offers two options for DNI renewal: in-person and online. Choosing the in-person option allows citizens to update various personal details, including address, marital status, education level, organ donation consent, signature, and parental information in line with their birth certificate.
If you opt for an in-person renewal, here’s what you need to prepare:
– A receipt for administrative fees. Note that the renewal is free for individuals with permanent disabilities, who must provide a Medical Disability Certificate or Conadis ID.
– A current personal photo, which can be taken free of charge at the Reniec service center. If the center lacks this service, you’ll need to provide a printed passport-sized photo meeting specific requirements, including a white background and no alterations.
– A utility bill or municipal tax receipt, no older than six months, displaying the registered address if you need to update your address.
– A sworn declaration for updating educational qualifications, such as confirmation of primary or secondary education or documentation for technical or higher studies.
Before starting your application, make sure to pay the required fees at Banco de la Nación agencies or via Pagalo.pe, and keep the payment receipt. The fees are as follows:
– Renewal of DNIe: S/ 41.00
– Transition from the traditional blue DNI to DNIe: S/ 41.00
– If you already have DNIe: S/ 41.00
– Renewal of the traditional blue DNI: S/ 30.00
For those who prefer online procedures:
– Your blue DNI or DNIe must be expired or within 60 days of expiring.
– Download the “DNI Bio Facial” app on your mobile device to update your photo and begin the online process through the Reniec website.
– During the process, you’ll be asked if you want to transition from the blue DNI to DNIe. If you paid S/ 30.00, you’ll select “No.” If you paid S/ 41.00, select “Yes.”
– You can also update your marital status, address, and organ donation decision.
– Choose a nearby service center for picking up your new DNI.
– After completing the request, you’ll receive a confirmation via email, and you can track the status online. Once processed fully, you can visit the selected agency to collect your new document.
Keep in mind that the collection of online applications must be done in person.
