Gigi and Bella Hadid have taken a significant step to support families in Palestine by donating $1 million. This generous contribution will be equally distributed among four organizations dedicated to aiding children and families: HEAL Palestine, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
These organizations are pivotal in providing humanitarian aid, including food, medical programs, psychological services, and assistance to displaced families. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which escalated following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, has intensified the need for such support.
HEAL Palestine, a nonpolitical, nonprofit humanitarian group, focuses on health, education, aid, and leadership. Their mission is to offer young Palestinians in Gaza a brighter future. PCRF, established in 1991, provides free medical care to thousands of injured and ill children. Their “Gaza Relief and Recovery” campaign aims to raise funds for essential medical supplies, food, clean water, and other necessities for families affected by the conflict. PCRF has also established pediatric cancer departments and a pediatric cardiology department in Palestine.
World Central Kitchen, founded by chef José Andrés, delivers chef-prepared meals to communities impacted by natural disasters and crises. The organization has provided over 400 million meals globally. Despite the challenges, including an April 1 attack by Israeli Defense Forces that killed seven WCK staffers, the organization continues its operations in Gaza. However, operations in Rafah have been suspended due to an Israeli air strike.
UNRWA USA National Committee, an independent nonprofit, supports humanitarian assistance for Palestine refugees. Their goal is to amplify the voices and experiences of Palestine refugees to secure essential resources for a better life.
The Hadid sisters’ donation comes shortly after Bella Hadid made a statement during her recent trip to Cannes. She wore a Keffiyeh dress and explained its significance on Instagram, highlighting her deep connection to Palestinian culture. Both sisters have been vocal about the conflict and its impact on Palestinians through their social media channels. Gigi Hadid expressed her empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, emphasizing her daily responsibility to support the cause.
Bella Hadid, in a May 29 Instagram post, shared her thoughts on the ongoing conflict, stating, “Palestine on my mind, in my blood and on my heart. Always… While I still have to go to work, even through this horror, to wear our culture makes me a proud Palestinian & I want the world to continue to see Palestine wherever we go.” She also highlighted designers who have supported the Palestinian cause, showcasing a Keffiyeh dress made by Michael and Hushi in 2001.
Gigi Hadid, in an October 10 Instagram post, shared her thoughts on the conflict, stating, “My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict — too many of which are children.” She emphasized her hopes and dreams for Palestinians, clarifying that none of them include harming Jewish people.
The Hadid sisters’ father, Mohamed Anwar Hadid, is a Palestinian property tycoon, and their connection to Palestine has been a significant part of their identity. Their donation aims to provide immediate relief and long-term support to those affected by the conflict.
The ongoing war has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and abducted around 250 others in the October 7 attack. The conflict has led to the deaths of over 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its count.
The Hadid sisters’ donation is a testament to their commitment to supporting Palestinian families during these challenging times. Their efforts to raise awareness and provide aid through reputable organizations highlight the importance of humanitarian support in conflict zones.
