Bette Midler is urging Disney to speed up the development of the script for “Hocus Pocus 3.” In a recent appearance on Busy Philipps’ QVC+ talk show, “Busy This Week,” Midler humorously emphasized the need for urgency, citing the advancing ages of the original cast members, including herself, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy.
“I haven’t seen the script, but I’ve heard rumblings,” Midler, 78, told Philipps, confirming Disney’s 2023 announcement that “Hocus Pocus 3” is in the works following the success of “Hocus Pocus 2” on Disney+. Screenwriter Jen D’Angelo has also expressed interest in exploring more of Hannah Waddingham’s character from the second film.
Despite the buzz, Midler admitted she hasn’t seen any concrete details about the story. She joked, “I think if they’re gonna, they oughta, because time is not just marching, time is barrel-assing to the finish line. Get us while we’re still breathing, I mean, God!”
Midler also reflected on the original “Hocus Pocus” film, which was initially considered a “dud” upon its 1993 release. However, it gained a cult following through annual airings on the Disney Channel. The cast faced “complete disinterest” when they initially pushed for a sequel, which only materialized in the streaming era.
In June, Midler mentioned on “The Jess Cagle Show” that discussions about a third film were happening “very gingerly and very gently,” but she had no concrete updates. Sarah Jessica Parker also suggested that an animated version of the third film could be a “cool and smart idea.”
Shortly after Disney confirmed the development of “Hocus Pocus 3,” original cast member Omri Katz expressed his willingness to return as Max Dennison if approached by Disney. “Yes, I would return if Disney approached me,” he said. “It would be an honor to return, hopefully with some of my fellow cast mates, and make a fun addition to the franchise!”
While Katz, Vinessa Shaw, and Thora Birch did not return for “Hocus Pocus 2,” D’Angelo revealed that early versions of the script included cameos for Max and other characters, as well as an expanded role for Birch’s character, Dani Dennison.
The enduring popularity of “Hocus Pocus” is a testament to its cultural impact. Initially underperforming at the box office, the film found new life through cable replays and home video sales, becoming a beloved Halloween classic.
