Canary Islands President “Perplexed” by Rejection of Immigration Law Reform: “Inexplicable”

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, expressed his disappointment during the government’s control session on Wednesday regarding the rejection in Congress of the proposed changes to the Immigration Law. He stated that he was "perplexed" by the outcome seen in the lower house yesterday.

In response to questions from parliamentary groups, Clavijo highlighted that after meeting with all the factions in Congress, they received 172 votes of support for the reform. He considered this to be a "notable success," allowing them to create a better text that received backing from all parties involved in the Canary Islands Migration Pact, with the exception of Vox.

Clavijo explained that after gathering this support, the only step left was for the government to reach an agreement with Junts and the Popular Party regarding funding. However, this proposal was not included in the final draft of the bill submitted to Congress by CC, PSOE, and Sumar.

He found it "inexplicable" that there had not been "a single meeting" between the Spanish government and both the Popular Party and Junts during this entire process. Clavijo remarked that the previous day’s events did not indicate that any efforts were made to reach an agreement.

Moreover, he clarified that he and the Minister for Social Rights, Candelaria Delgado, had to hastily draft a new text at midday in an attempt to reach an agreement. They even requested that if there were no guarantees of advancing the consideration of the proposal, it could be left on the table. “Therefore, I am perplexed by what happened yesterday,” he reiterated.
