Country Star Mark Chesnutt Cancels Shows Following Emergency Quadruple Bypass Surgery

Country star Mark Chesnutt has announced the cancellation of his upcoming shows following an emergency quadruple bypass surgery. The country singer took to social media to update his fans on his health condition and explain the necessity of canceling his scheduled performances.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the cancellation of my upcoming shows,” Chesnutt shared. “I send my love and gratitude to my family and friends, the band and fans for your understanding, prayers, and support, and look forward to seeing you all again soon at a honky tonk near you.”

The announcement revealed that Chesnutt experienced a heart health issue over the weekend, which led to his hospitalization on Sunday, June 16. The “I Just Wanted You to Know” singer underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery, and the recovery period necessitates the cancellation of his show dates.

“Mark underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery. The recuperation time will make it necessary to cancel show dates,” the statement read. “Please respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time of recovery.”

Chesnutt was scheduled to perform in Louisiana and Texas on June 21 and June 22, respectively, and in Canada on June 30. The sudden health scare has forced him to take a break from his busy touring schedule.

In November 2023, Chesnutt had opened up about battling “extreme health issues,” stating in a Facebook post that he was taking time off to focus on his health. “I’ll be coming off the road for the next couple of months to concentrate on getting well… to take care of me, my family, and so that I can get back out on the road, to give back to ALL of you who have shown me unconditional support, care, and love throughout my entire career,” he shared.

The artist’s team has requested privacy for Chesnutt and his family during this challenging time. Chesnutt’s official website currently lists upcoming shows starting in September, indicating that he plans to return to the stage once he has fully recovered.

Chesnutt has earned eight No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay hits, including the multi-week chart-toppers “It’s a Little Too Late,” “Brother Jukebox,” and “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” The Beaumont, Texas native has built a lasting career with songs like “Blame It On Texas,” “Old Flames Have New Names,” and “It Sure Is Monday.”

The news of Chesnutt’s surgery and show cancellations has been met with an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists. Dauphin’s Countryfest, where Chesnutt was set to perform on June 30, expressed their sadness over the news. “Dauphin’s Countryfest is extremely saddened to hear the news that we won’t have Mark Chesnutt grace our stage this summer,” the festival said in a statement. “We continue to send healing vibes to Mark and his family during his recovery. Our team is working diligently to secure another act to add to our wonderful Sunday lineup and will make an announcement as soon as we can.”

Chesnutt’s health scare comes after months of dealing with various health issues. In a November Instagram post, he shared his struggles and his decision to take time off to focus on his well-being. “Many of you who know me well, know that I have been struggling with a battle that I’ve fought to overcome for many years on my own. Now after some extreme health issues I’ve recently experienced, the time has come. The fight is over,” he wrote.

He continued, “I’ve made the decision to take the time to get healthy. I’ll be coming off the road for the next couple of months to concentrate on getting well… to take care of me, my family, and so that I can get back out on the road, to give back to ALL of you who have shown me unconditional support, care, and love throughout my entire career.”

Chesnutt concluded by expressing his appreciation for his fans’ understanding and sensitivity to his decision. “I’ll see you when I return to the road in February,” he said. “Be good to one another. Stay well. God Bless.”

As Chesnutt recovers from his emergency surgery, fans and the country music community continue to send their thoughts and prayers for his speedy recovery.
