Creed performed megahit Higher live for 4000 people reveals Mark Tremonti

Creed’s iconic track “Higher” was spontaneously created in front of a live audience of 4,000 people, as revealed by guitarist Mark Tremonti. In a recent interview with Guitar World, Tremonti, who also plays in the alt-metal band Alter Bridge, shared the fascinating story behind the song’s creation. The 50-year-old guitarist explained that the track emerged from impromptu onstage jams initiated by vocalist Scott Stapp.

Tremonti recounted how Stapp enjoyed challenging the band by announcing, “We’re going to write a song,” right in front of a live audience. This practice began during their college years, where Stapp would put the band on the spot at clubs. Tremonti would start riffing, the band would follow, and Stapp would begin singing. The chorus of “Higher” was born in this spontaneous manner, right in front of a live crowd.

Stapp added that the audience for the creation of “Higher” was a substantial 4,000-strong. He mentioned that he still enjoys this spontaneous songwriting process, even though it might not be as fun for the other band members. Stapp emphasized the creative flow that comes from such impromptu sessions, crediting Tremonti’s guitar licks and interludes for triggering his inspiration.

Creed, formed in 1994, released “Higher” five years later as the lead single from their second album, “Human Clay.” The track marked a significant breakthrough for the post-grunge band, becoming their first US top 10 hit by reaching number seven on the Billboard charts. “Human Clay” itself topped the US charts upon release and has been certified Platinum 11 times by the RIAA.

The band experienced a split in 2004, shortly after Tremonti, drummer Scott Philips, and then-former bassist Brian Marshall formed Alter Bridge with vocalist/guitarist Myles Kennedy. Creed reactivated from 2009 to 2012 and reunited again last year, continuing to captivate their fans with their music and live performances.

The spontaneous creation of “Higher” in front of a live audience is a testament to Creed’s unique approach to music and their ability to connect with their fans in real-time. This story adds a layer of authenticity and raw creativity to the band’s legacy, highlighting the dynamic interplay between the band members and their audience.
