The backlog of cases within the Colombian justice system has led to Ronald RodrÃguez Rozo, the former deputy director of the National Protection Unit (UNP), regaining his freedom. This follows his arrest on charges of drug trafficking.
On the morning of Monday, July 22, a judge ordered RodrÃguez’s release due to the expiration of the legal timeframe concerning his case, which began with his capture in Bogotá. This decision was reached after RodrÃguez’s attorney, Iván Cancino, requested a hearing to discuss his client’s release, which the court approved.
RodrÃguez was arrested last year in Teusaquillo during an operation conducted by the Technical Investigation Corps (CTI) of the Prosecutor’s Office. During his arrest, authorities seized three cell phones, a hard drive, a tablet, and sixty million pesos in cash.
He faced charges of aggravated trafficking, manufacturing, or possession of narcotics, as well as conspiracy to commit a crime. According to the prosecution, the former official allegedly facilitated the storage and transport of 168 kilograms of cocaine using an official vehicle.
Additionally, authorities intercepted a shipment during a traffic control operation in Totoró, Cauca, on December 10, 2022. Following this incident, the prosecution sought a custodial measure, which was granted by the judge, resulting in RodrÃguez being placed in prison.
