A 28-year-old man, Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, was fatally shot by Yellowstone National Park rangers on the Fourth of July after allegedly threatening to carry out a mass shooting. Fussner, who worked for Xanterra Parks and Resorts, a business operating within the park, was confronted by law enforcement rangers early in the morning while reportedly firing a semi-automatic rifle toward a dining facility at Canyon Village. At the time, approximately 200 people were inside the facility.
The incident began just after midnight when Yellowstone’s 911 dispatch center received a report that a woman had been held against her will by a man with a gun at a residence in Canyon Village. The woman informed law enforcement that Fussner had threatened to kill her and others, and had plans to carry out mass shootings at July 4th events outside the park.
In response, law enforcement rangers were strategically deployed throughout the park. Around 8 a.m., rangers encountered Fussner near the service entrance of the Canyon Lodge dining facility. Fussner was reportedly walking toward the entrance while firing his semi-automatic rifle. During the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Fussner was shot by the rangers and died at the scene. One ranger was also shot in a lower extremity and was transported to a hospital in stable condition. The ranger has since been released, and no other injuries were reported.
The investigation into the incident is being led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming. The investigation will include the shooting involving the rangers, who have been placed on paid administrative leave as per National Park Service policy.
Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly praised the rangers’ actions, stating, “Thanks to the heroic actions of our law enforcement rangers, many lives were saved here last Thursday. These rangers immediately confronted this shooter and took decisive action to ensure he was no longer a threat to public safety. We are working now to provide maximum support to those involved and their families.”
The shooting led to the temporary closure of Canyon Lodge, a complex of hotel rooms, cabins, and dining facilities. Some parts of the complex remained closed as of Tuesday. The park officials have not commented on whether any Yellowstone law enforcement rangers have been placed on leave.
Fussner’s actions and the subsequent response by law enforcement have highlighted the importance of preparedness and quick action in preventing potential mass shootings. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers and the critical role they play in ensuring public safety.
The park’s response team, which included more than 20 law enforcement rangers, was instrumental in locating and confronting Fussner. Their coordinated efforts helped to protect park visitors and employees from potential harm. The quick and decisive actions of the rangers undoubtedly prevented a tragedy and saved many lives.
As the investigation continues, the focus will be on understanding the motives behind Fussner’s actions and ensuring that all protocols were followed during the incident. The findings of the investigation will be crucial in determining any further actions that need to be taken to enhance security measures within the park.
The incident has also raised questions about the mental health and background of the shooter. Understanding the factors that led to this tragic event will be essential in preventing similar incidents in the future. The park authorities and law enforcement agencies will need to work together to address any gaps in security and ensure that such threats are identified and mitigated promptly.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the park has been working to provide support to those affected by the incident. This includes offering counseling services to employees and visitors who may have been traumatized by the events. The park’s management is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone within its boundaries.
The tragic events of July 4th at Yellowstone National Park serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise even in places of natural beauty and tranquility. The bravery and quick response of the law enforcement rangers were crucial in averting a potential mass shooting and ensuring the safety of hundreds of people.
As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that the findings will provide valuable insights into preventing such incidents in the future and enhancing the overall security of national parks. The commitment of the park authorities to support those affected and to learn from this incident will be key in moving forward and ensuring that Yellowstone remains a safe and welcoming place for all visitors.
