Isabel Allende’s acclaimed novel, The House of the Spirits, is set to be adapted into an eight-episode Spanish series. This exciting project will be filmed in Chile and released on Prime Video, as announced by the Amazon platform on Monday.
The series will be produced under the guidance of Allende herself, along with Eva Longoria as an executive producer. The cast includes notable actors such as Dolores Fonzi, Alfonso Herrera, Nicole Wallace, Juan Pablo Raba, and Fernanda Castillo, among others.
Based on one of the most iconic novels from the Hispanic-American literary canon of the 20th century, the new adaptation follows a family saga that spans three generations, all set in a fictional Latin American country. This beloved story was previously adapted into a film in 1993.
In a statement released on Monday, Allende expressed her excitement: "My first novel, The House of the Spirits, has been published worldwide for 40 years, and now it will be a wonderful series on Amazon, with Eva Longoria leading an unparalleled creative team. I hope everyone enjoys it."
The upcoming series, anticipated to debut in 2024, is being produced by FilmNation, which was also behind the critically acclaimed film Anora, directed by Sean Baker and awarded the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Additionally, the project has support from Fábula, a Chilean production company whose documentary La memoria infinita was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars this year.
Javiera Balmaceda, Amazon Studios’ executive for Latin America, Canada, and Australia, shared her joy about the project, stating it is "a dream come true to bring The House of the Spirits to audiences worldwide." She added, “Our goal has been to celebrate Allende’s literary masterpiece, highlighting the brilliant Latin American talent both in front of and behind the camera, while adopting an innovative approach to the story.”
This adaptation not only promises to stay true to Allende’s original vision but also aims to resonate with modern audiences through its unique storytelling and diverse cast.
