This week, Sofía Vergara made history as the first Latin American actress nominated for ‘Best Actress’ at the 2024 Emmy Awards for her role in Netflix’s ‘Griselda.’ In this series, she portrays the infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, also known as “The Cocaine Godmother.” The series became one of the most-watched on the platform, and now Vergara has a chance to win her first Emmy with this role.
Although Vergara is best known for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the hit comedy ‘Modern Family,’ for which she received several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for ‘Best Supporting Actress,’ it is her performance in ‘Griselda’ that may finally earn her the prestigious award.
Upon hearing about her nomination, Vergara expressed her gratitude on Instagram, saying, “I never dreamed that after ‘Modern Family,’ I could be part of something as special as ‘Griselda.’ I feel honored to be recognized alongside Jodi, Brie, Juno, and Naomi, incredible women who delivered amazing television this year. Thank you to the television academy for this incredible honor!”
Vergara revealed that ‘Griselda Blanco’ is her first dramatic role, making this moment even more significant for her. She also served as a producer on this Netflix project, which took 15 years to complete.
Another actress making history at this year’s Emmy Awards is Selena Gomez. While born in the United States, Gomez has Mexican roots through her parents and has expressed pride in her Latin heritage. She received a nomination for ‘Best Leading Actress’ in a comedy for her work in ‘Only Murders In The Building’ (MAX).
Gomez joins Jenna Ortega, America Ferrera, and Rita Moreno as the fourth Latina woman to be nominated in this category. The 76th Emmy Awards will be held on September 15 and broadcast live at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
