Spain will host the XXX Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State in 2026, as announced by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib) on July 22. The decision came after the 22 countries within the Ibero-American Community unanimously supported Spain’s candidacy.
Following this win, Spain will take over the pro tempore secretariat of the organization once the XXIX Summit concludes this November in Cuenca, Ecuador. For the 2025-2026 period, Spain will lead various ministerial meetings, forums, and preparatory work for the upcoming summit.
Andrés Allamand, the Ibero-American Secretary General from Chile, expressed his congratulations to the Spanish government and emphasized Spain’s ongoing commitment to the Ibero-American project.
Reacting to the announcement, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares took to social media platform X to describe the news as a “great moment for Spain.” He expressed appreciation for the confidence and support from Segib and the member states.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry highlighted that the summit serves as a unique platform for dialogue, political coordination, and cooperation globally. They outlined that the primary goal for the XXX Summit is to usher in a new phase of reaffirmation for the Ibero-American system and determine key priority areas for collaboration.
In line with this, the Spanish government noted that one goal will be to approve the Four-Year Action Plan for Ibero-American Cooperation for 2026-2029. They underscored that Ibero-American cooperation is vital to this system, allowing decisions made by Heads of State and Government to translate into tangible initiatives that have a direct and positive impact on the Ibero-American citizens.
