star Danny Huston says reboot won’t imitate original

Lionsgate has recently unveiled a brief teaser for the upcoming reboot of “The Crow,” offering fans another glimpse of Eric Draven in action. Danny Huston, who stars in the film, has reassured fans that this new version will not simply mimic the ’90s classic.

While the reboot of “The Crow” may not be the most eagerly awaited film, it has certainly piqued the curiosity of many. Fans are keen to see how this new take will differ from the original. In what seems to be a prelude to a more extensive trailer, Lionsgate has released a short promo. Though only a few seconds long, it showcases Eric Draven, played by Bill Skarsgård, taking down some villains with brutal efficiency.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Danny Huston, known for his role in “Wonder Woman,” emphasized that the reboot aims to offer something fresh. Huston, who portrays the antagonist in the film, stated that the new movie will not attempt to replicate the original. “You don’t want to remake things that are already good. They should be left alone because they are good. But they can also serve as inspiration. While respecting the original, we wanted to create something different. Imitating it would result in a lesser version. This film offers a chance to tell a new story about revenge, with a unique visual language, while still being inspired by the original and its characters.”

Although “The Crow” has not yet been screened for critics, an early reaction was shared online by Cliff Dorfman, a writer for “Warrior.” Dorfman, who saw an early screening, tagged the studio in his post but quickly deleted it. However, his initial reaction was captured: “If one happened to see a screening of @TheCrow_Movie #thecrow, one might say it’s horrible, unwatchable, and not worth the money. It’s much worse than the original. It is. And don’t.”

It’s worth noting that Dorfman wrote the screenplay for an earlier version of “The Crow,” which was to be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez. This could mean his opinion is not entirely unbiased. Nevertheless, his harsh critique may not come as a shock to many fans.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Soulmates Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.”

The cast also includes FKA twigs, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger in undisclosed roles. The script was penned by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider.

“The Crow” is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2024.
