Fleetwood Mac, one of the most iconic rock bands in history, has officially come to an end. The band’s legendary run concluded following the sudden death of longtime member Christine McVie in 2022. Stevie Nicks, a key figure in the band, has now confirmed that Fleetwood Mac will not continue without McVie.
In a recent interview with Mojo, Nicks stated, “Without Christine, no can do. There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”
Fleetwood Mac had already faced significant changes in recent years. In 2018, they parted ways with longtime co-leader Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham later commented on the situation, attributing the split to Nicks’ need for a certain kind of attention. Despite this, Nicks has made it clear that even if Buckingham were to return, the band could not continue. She cited his health issues, including open heart surgery in 2019, as a major concern. “Even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he’s had some health problems. It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of touring that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go out for a year and a half. It’s so demanding,” Nicks explained.
In the same interview, Nicks shared that she continues to perform Fleetwood Mac songs during her solo shows. She expressed pride in her current band and acknowledged that while she would prefer not to be “freed up” from Fleetwood Mac, she is now able to focus on her solo career. “When I walk onstage, I couldn’t be prouder of my band. I mean, I would rather not be freed up from Fleetwood Mac, because of Christine. But I’m in a place where I can concentrate on my solo work. I can do anything I want now, and not have to worry about stopping and going back to Fleetwood Mac,” she said.
Nicks also mentioned that Fleetwood Mac’s music remains a significant part of her setlist. “Fleetwood Mac is all over my set. Now that there is no more Fleetwood Mac, that opens the door for me to do other songs, like ‘The Chain,’ that I’ve never done solo. I will keep the music of Fleetwood Mac alive for as long as I can,” she promised.
Recently, Nicks had to cancel a show in Hershey, Pennsylvania at the last minute due to illness within her band. The announcement was made via a tweet from Hershey Entertainment Venues, stating, “Regrettably, due to illness in the band, tonight’s performance is being postponed. Please hold on to your tickets. A new date will be announced soon.”
Stevie Nicks has made it clear that Fleetwood Mac’s journey has come to an end. Following Christine McVie’s death in 2022, Nicks stated, “There’s no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”
Nicks and Mick Fleetwood have both expressed similar sentiments since McVie’s passing. In a new interview with Mojo, Nicks made her most explicit statement yet: “Without Christine [McVie], no can do.”
Nicks also addressed the possibility of Lindsey Buckingham rejoining the band. She noted that even if they were to reconcile, Buckingham’s health issues would likely prevent him from participating in the demanding tours that Fleetwood Mac is known for. “Even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he’s had some health problems. It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of touring that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go out for a year and a half. It’s so demanding,” she said.
As a result, Nicks is content to focus on her solo career and celebrate Fleetwood Mac’s legacy on her own. “Fleetwood Mac is all over my set… I will keep the music of Fleetwood Mac alive, for as long as I can,” she promised.
Stevie Nicks will wrap up her latest slate of US shows this week, including a co-headlining date at Soldier Field in Chicago with Billy Joel, before embarking on a run of shows in the UK and Europe in July.
Fleetwood Mac’s legacy will undoubtedly live on through their music and the memories they created for fans around the world. While the band may no longer perform together, Stevie Nicks’ commitment to keeping their music alive ensures that their influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
