The DC Universe is on the brink of a significant transformation, with James Gunn and Peter Safran leading the charge into a new era of movies and television shows. The first major release in this revitalized universe will be Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman movie, slated for a summer 2025 debut. As filming progresses, fans have been treated to glimpses of some of the film’s costumed characters, including Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, portrayed by Maria Gabriela de Faria.
In a recent interview with Marvel Latinews, de Faria shared her experiences and excitement about donning her superhero costume. “It is a beautiful suit, and every time I put it on, I don’t put it on by myself,” de Faria revealed. “I have four people putting it on me because it is not easy. One of those people has to be a man who grabs me hard and puts me on, or rather, pushes me in the suit, and every time I put it on, I say: ‘I love you suit, I love you, I love you suit, let’s do it, we’re going to achieve it.'”
De Faria continued, “The character is so physical and you do a lot of things, so, well, there is a bit of resistance with the suit always, no. But yes, it is hot, especially when we film in the middle of summer. It is quite challenging, but, as an actor, you learn to use the difficulties to your advantage and at the end of the day I am dying on that set and my character is trying to survive too. So beautiful.”
The character of The Engineer has an intriguing history within the DC Universe. Originally created by Warren Ellis and Tom Raney in 1997’s StormWatch #48, the mantle was first held by an unnamed man who sought to remake the world using nanotechnology as part of The Changers. After his death two issues later, Angela Spica took up the mantle, becoming a member of The Authority in 1999’s The Authority #1. Both versions of The Engineer are genetically enhanced by nanites, with Angela possessing the ability to transform her body into liquid and solid shapes.
De Faria’s enthusiasm for her role is palpable. “I’m very happy and can’t shut up about it so here’s a compilation of moments after I found out [James Gunn] had invited me to play Angela, The Engineer,” she wrote on Instagram following the announcement of her casting.
The upcoming Superman film promises to be a fresh take on the iconic superhero’s story. According to DC Studios, the movie will explore Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. The character will embody truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that often views kindness as outdated.
Written and directed by James Gunn, the film boasts an impressive cast. David Corenswet will take on the role of Clark Kent / Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The cast also includes Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.
As anticipation builds for the film’s release, fans are eager to see how this new iteration of the DC Universe will unfold. With a talented cast and crew, and a fresh vision for one of the most beloved superheroes of all time, the future looks bright for the DC Universe.
Maria Gabriela de Faria’s portrayal of The Engineer is particularly exciting, as it brings a lesser-known but fascinating character to the forefront. Her enthusiasm and dedication to the role are evident, and fans are sure to be captivated by her performance. The intricate and “beautiful” costume she describes adds another layer of authenticity and excitement to the character, making her a standout in the upcoming film.
As the DC Universe continues to evolve under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, fans can look forward to a new era of storytelling that honors the legacy of these iconic characters while introducing fresh and exciting elements. The Superman movie, with its star-studded cast and compelling narrative, is poised to be a significant milestone in this new chapter.
