The Fascinating Details of the Most Viral Uniforms We’ll See at the 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

As the countdown begins for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the spotlight is shining on the significance of sportswear in the textile industry this year. Notable designers such as Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani are crafting uniforms for the competitors representing their countries. As we approach the opening ceremony, we can expect to see these delegations showcasing genuine works of art in their attire.

Just 48 hours before the events start, one nation, in particular, has already captured the attention of fashion experts with its stunning ceremonial outfits. If there were a design competition, they could very well claim the gold medal.

The hype intensified when content creator Ryan Yip shared a video analyzing the outfits of the Mongolian delegation. To date, his explanation has racked up over five million views, prompting numerous media outlets and influencers to highlight the stylish innovations that the Mongolian athletes will flaunt during the upcoming opening ceremony on July 26, along the Seine River.

Created by designers from Michel & Amazonka, these ensembles are inspired by the traditional Mongolian "deel," a garment resembling a kaftan, but featuring a belt and a high Mandarin collar. The uniforms prominently display bright colors such as red, gold, and blue, reflecting the national flag on a light base.

The vests feature intricate gold embroidery of the country’s national symbol, the Soyombo, alongside a flaming torch and the Olympic rings. The ceremonial tunic paired with long pants presents a distinguished look for the male flag bearer, setting it apart from the casual tracksuits that other nations will wear during their debut on the Seine.

While the women’s attire maintains a similar straight and flowing silhouette, it incorporates additional details and accessories, including a bag reminiscent of India’s potli and ornate earrings. Instead of the traditional Mongolian boots known as “gutals,” the women will wear low-heeled shoes with pointed toes.

Creating each of these uniforms took approximately 20 hours of work, according to the National Olympic Committee of Mongolia. The design firm has previously crafted uniforms for Mongolia at the Beijing Winter Olympics (2008) and the Tokyo Summer Olympics (2020).

Haitian designer Stella Jean collaborated with Philippe Dodard to create stunning outfits featuring a colorful ethnic pattern inspired by the local culture. Both the men’s jacket and the women’s vest draw from traditional Haitian clothing and are made from light blue cotton sourced from the island.

Meanwhile, Spain made a splash with its patriotic attire, despite not featuring a well-known designer. The country’s uniforms, produced by the sports brand Joma, gained particular attention for the flattering midi skirt with pleats in the gradient colors of the Spanish flag. The ceremonial outfit is essentially a summer suit finished off with white sneakers, offering a stylish yet casual vibe.

In the United States, Ralph Lauren designed the gala uniforms, incorporating classic American symbols such as denim and sporty sneakers into the outfit. Emphasizing a "preppy" aesthetic that merges tailoring with comfort, Lauren has helped solidify the U.S. as a major player in the fashion scene.

Finally, Jamaica is not only gaining attention for its stylish appearance but also for the technology used by Puma in crafting its uniforms. The designs are aimed at enhancing athlete performance with strategically placed cuts and graphics that embody movement, ensuring the Jamaican delegation stands out in the Olympic village with their dynamic aesthetics.
