The second season of Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set to introduce some of the most eerie creatures from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels. Among these, the live-action Barrow-wights will make their debut, adding a new layer of horror to the series.
Recently, it was revealed that Tom Bombadil, portrayed by Rory Kinnear, will be introduced in the upcoming season. Now, Empire Magazine has confirmed that the Barrow-wights, sinister creatures from the same section of “The Fellowship of the Ring” that has never been adapted before, will also appear. The magazine shared new covers and a still from the series, featuring Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charlie Vickers as Sauron in both his Halbrand and Annatar forms, and a first look at the terrifying Barrow-wights.
In Tolkien’s book, the hobbits encounter these undead horrors and are nearly doomed until Bombadil rescues them. While it remains unclear how the show will incorporate these creatures, the image suggests that Galadriel will encounter some eerie glowing fog on the Barrow Downs.
Jason Smith, the VFX supervisor for “The Rings of Power,” shared his excitement with Empire Magazine: “The Barrow-wights are ancient, reanimated heroes, acting for evil against their will. It was super-exciting to take on something I hadn’t seen before. We’ve seen undead before, but not like this. We’re doing a little horror movie in Middle-earth.”
The subscriber cover for the issue features a ghoulish illustration of the Barrow-wights, created by concept artist Einar Martinsen. This visual promises a chilling addition to the series, bringing Tolkien’s terrifying monsters to life in a way that fans have never seen before.
The narrative for Season 2 continues to build on the epic scope and ambition of the first season. Sauron, cast out by Galadriel and without an army or ally, must now rely on his cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power. These rings will enable him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.
The season plunges beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world teetering on the brink of calamity. As friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle valiantly to hold on to what matters most: each other.
Returning cast members include Morfydd Clark, Benjamin Walker, Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers, Markella Kavenagh, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tyroe Muhafidin, Maxim Baldry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Owain Arthur, Trystan Gravelle, Ema Horvath, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Leon Wadham, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.
New additions to the ensemble include Sam Hazeldine, who replaces Joseph Mawle as Adar, and Ciarán Hinds, Rory Kinnear, and Tanya Moodie in key roles.
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 is set to return to Prime Video on August 29. Fans of the series and Tolkien’s work can look forward to a season filled with new characters, deeper storylines, and the introduction of the chilling Barrow-wights, promising a blend of fantasy and horror that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
