Toro y Moi has unveiled a new single titled “Heaven,” featuring Kevin Abstract and Lev. This track is accompanied by a visually captivating video directed by India Sleem. “Heaven” is part of Toro y Moi’s upcoming album, “Hole Erth,” which is set to be released on September 6th via Dead Oceans. The album promises a diverse array of collaborations, including contributions from Benjamin Gibbard, Porches, Glaive, and more.
Reflecting on the creation of “Heaven,” Toro y Moi shared an intriguing insight into the songwriting process. He described how some songs seem to materialize effortlessly, almost as if they possess a magical quality. “Heaven” was one such song. It emerged during the first day of the “Hole Erth” sessions at Different Fur in San Francisco. Toro y Moi recounted how he asked Grace Coleman, the engineer, to open a random session from a batch of demos. Within an hour, he found himself completing the second verse, realizing that he had stumbled upon a song worth finishing.
This experience was a moment of surrender for Toro y Moi, as he let go of control and embraced the role of a songwriter. He focused solely on his thoughts, without worrying about production or mixing. The song became a reflection on the journey of a musician, highlighting the constant practice and the delicate balance required to navigate the creative process. Toro y Moi pondered the challenge of making decisions when faced with poetically polarizing options.
In discussing the album “Hole Erth,” Toro y Moi expressed his hope that listeners would enjoy what he described as a “suburban anthem.” He reminisced about the clear distinction between mainstream and underground artists during his upbringing, noting how that line has become increasingly blurred in recent times. This blurring of boundaries has made it difficult for him to discern his own preferences, adding an element of introspection to the album.
