Angelina Jolie and her daughter, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, are basking in the glory of their first Tony Awards win. The 49-year-old actress, known for her role in “Eternals,” and her 15-year-old daughter took the stage with the cast and crew of “The Outsiders” after the production clinched the Best Musical award at the 77th Annual Tony Awards.

Both Angelina and Vivienne received trophies, with Angelina serving as a producer and Vivienne as a producer’s assistant on the Broadway show. Angelina, dressed in a stunning draped teal gown, stood proudly beside her daughter as producer Matthew Rego accepted the award on behalf of the team. Vivienne, who recently chose to drop her father Brad Pitt’s last name in the show’s playbill, wore a teal suit that matched her mother’s outfit.

The mother-daughter duo did not speak during the acceptance, but Angelina later presented a live performance from “The Outsiders” company, featuring the musical number “Tulsa ’67.” She joined a roster of A-list presenters, including Nick Jonas, Jeffrey Wright, and Jennifer Hudson, on theater’s biggest night.

“The Outsiders,” a musical adaptation of the 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton and the subsequent film, garnered 12 nominations, making it the second most-nominated show of the night. The musical tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade, and their Greaser family as they navigate the challenges of self-discovery and societal acceptance.

Angelina and Vivienne first became involved with the production after seeing it at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2023. Since then, they have been actively involved, even attending the show’s opening in March. In May, they supported the arts in Los Angeles by attending the opening night of “Reefer Madness: The Musical,” where they posed for pictures with Kristen Bell.

Angelina and Brad Pitt, who were famously known as “Brangelina” during their 12-year relationship, share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and her twin brother, Knox. The family has always been in the public eye, but this Tony win marks a significant milestone for Angelina and Vivienne.

Producer Matthew Rego specifically acknowledged Angelina’s contributions when he accepted the Tony. He also mentioned S.E. Hinton, who was in the audience. “Susie Hinton wrote ‘The Outsiders’ 60 years ago, and it has changed countless lives. Your story and its eternal message of love and family have forever impacted us,” Rego said.

Angelina did not speak on stage or backstage, but in a recent interview, she explained how she got involved with the musical. “My daughter Viv loves theater. She saw ‘The Outsiders’ at La Jolla multiple times and urged me to see it. I was moved by how deeply it resonated with her,” Angelina shared.

Director Danya Taymor praised Angelina’s involvement, noting that she provided invaluable feedback and support. “Angelina was in the room a lot, offering incredible insights and championing the vision of the show. She was also there for the actors, many of whom were making their Broadway debuts,” Taymor said.

Vivienne also played a crucial role, offering notes and observations that helped shape the production. “Vivienne has an incredible eye and provided amazing notes. Her involvement made the work better,” Taymor added.

The musical, set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1967, follows Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade, and their Greaser family as they confront their affluent rivals, the Socs. The show explores themes of identity and acceptance, resonating deeply with audiences.

“The Outsiders” faced stiff competition from other musicals like “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “Suffs,” and “Water for Elephants.” Despite the tough competition, the musical also won awards for Best Direction, Best Sound Design, and Best Lighting Design.

The 2024 Tony Awards featured performances from various shows, including “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “Merrily We Roll Along,” “Suffs,” and “Water for Elephants.” The event was hosted by Ariana DeBose and aired live from the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

Angelina and Vivienne’s win at the Tony Awards marks a significant achievement in their journey in the theater world. Their involvement in “The Outsiders” has not only brought them accolades but also highlighted their passion for the arts.
