North Adams Exhibit Celebrates Immigrant Artists Community News

In a vibrant celebration of immigrant artistry, MCLA’s Gallery 51 is set to unveil “Migritude,” an exhibition that will run from June 7 to July 14. This event, a collaboration between the Studios at Mass MoCA and the Berkshire Immigrant Center’s Iris Residency, aims to highlight the diverse talents of immigrant artists.

The opening reception, scheduled for Friday, June 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., promises an evening of live music and refreshments. This gathering will mark the beginning of an exhibition that underscores the rich cultural contributions of immigrant artists in the region.

The Iris Residency, initiated in 2023 by the Studios at Mass MoCA and the Berkshire Immigrant Center, is dedicated to supporting artists in Western or Central Massachusetts who were born outside the U.S. or identify as first or second-generation Americans. This initiative has provided a platform for these artists to express their unique perspectives and experiences.

“Migritude,” a term coined by featured artist Shailja Patel, encapsulates the essence of the exhibition. It brings together the works of five selected Iris Residency fellows: Cima Khademi, Clemente Sajquiy, Marina Dominguez, Hanna Sobolieva, and Patel herself. Each artist presents their individual approach to the ongoing journey of forging connections between their heritage and their new home.

The exhibition is guest-curated by Carolina Porras-Monroy and Luiza Folegatti, the coordinators of the Iris Fellowship. Their expertise and vision have been instrumental in bringing this diverse collection of works to life.
