Taylor Swift fans and Marvel enthusiasts will need to temper their excitement: Taylor Swift will not be appearing in the upcoming “Deadpool and Wolverine” film. Despite the swirling rumors and speculation, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that the pop superstar will not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next big release, set to hit theaters on July 26.
The buzz around Swift’s potential involvement in the MCU has been circulating since 2015. Fans speculated that she might make her debut in the franchise, especially after a photo surfaced of Swift with Sophie Turner and James McAvoy, who starred in “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Turner even fueled the rumors by posting a still from the movie on Instagram in 2016, making a playful reference to Swift’s album “1989.”
Adding to the speculation, a recent IMAX movie poster for “Deadpool and Wolverine” featured the titular characters, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, wearing friendship bracelets reminiscent of those from Swift’s Eras Tour. This led many to believe that Swift might appear as Dazzler, a mutant pop star from the Marvel comics.
Director and co-writer Shawn Levy, who has been seen socializing with Swift, Jackman, Reynolds, and Blake Lively, has been tight-lipped about the rumors. When asked about Swift’s potential role, Levy chose to remain ambiguous, stating, “I’m no dummy… You’re going to have to wait and see.”
Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has also addressed the rumors in various interviews. In a 2022 interview with PEOPLE, he denied Swift’s involvement. However, in a later interview with Fandango, he hinted at the unpredictable nature of the Deadpool universe, saying, “Anything can happen and that’s sort of what I love about this universe. Surprises are the essence of Deadpool.”
Despite the denials, the rumors persisted, especially after Reynolds, Jackman, and Levy were seen attending a Kansas City Chiefs NFL game with Swift. The sighting reignited speculation, given Swift’s relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and her close friendship with Reynolds and Lively.
Levy and Reynolds have both played coy in interviews, neither confirming nor denying Swift’s involvement. Levy, in an April 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, expressed his reluctance to address the rumors directly, citing the intense pressure to avoid discussing them. Reynolds echoed this sentiment in a May 2024 interview with Fandango, emphasizing the speculative nature of such films.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” will feature confirmed cast members Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Rob Delaney, and Lewis Tan. The film is set to be Marvel Studios’ first R-rated release, promising a unique and edgy addition to the MCU.
While the idea of Taylor Swift joining the Marvel universe as Dazzler was an exciting prospect for many, it appears that fans will have to wait for another opportunity to see the Grammy-winning artist in a superhero role. For now, Swifties and Marvel fans alike can look forward to the surprises that “Deadpool and Wolverine” will undoubtedly bring when it premieres on July 26.
